To help finance their studies, international students can apply for and receive American University Scholarships merit awards and scholarships from AU and other organizations. The following information is provided as a resource for international students planning to finance their studies at AU.

American University (AU) offers a limited number of generous partial merit scholarships to academically qualified international first-year undergraduate students from around the world. International students are not eligible for need-based financial aid.

Merit scholarships range in value from $6,000 to $25,000 per academic year (renewable subject to conditions).

To be considered for AU merit scholarships, no separate application form or process is required. Only the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship requires a separate application.

The merit awards for international students at American University are partial, rather than full, scholarships. They are given for outstanding academic achievement, excellent English communication skills, leadership, volunteerism, and community service.

The merit award process is extremely competitive, and the number of scholarships available is limited. All merit awards at American University are given at the time of admission, not after enrollment. These funds are renewable for all four years of study based on continued academic success.

Graduate Students AU Merit Awards-American University Scholarships

Graduate Merit Awards are available to talented international masters and doctoral students through their departments. Each year, these awards provide waivers ranging from twelve credits to full tuition. Stipends are also possible. Applicants should contact departments directly for more information.

When to Apply/Application Deadline-AU Scholarships

For fall applicants, the priority deadline for university-wide merit awards is February 1st. However, some academic departments continue to consider merit award applicants until late spring. More so, applicants are encouraged to apply by February 1. American University Scholarships
