The Confucius Institute scholarship application covers tuition and lodging (in a university residence, in a room shared with another person), basic medical insurance, and a monthly allowance for personal expenses, which is divided as follows:

1. Monthly tuition for BTCSOL students or Chinese language and culture courses is 2,500 Yuan (approximately 350 USD).
2. MTCSOL students pay 3,000 Yuan per month (approximately 420 USD per month).

The possibility of scholarship holders living off campus (rather than in university residences) has recently been considered. In such cases, the Confucius Institute provides 700 Yuan per month (in addition to the monthly allowance) to help with rental costs.

Scholarships for future Chinese teachers.

There are three options:

• The Master of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (MTCSOL) scholarship is for two academic years.
• One academic year of Chinese language and culture scholarship + two years of MTCSOL: There are three academic courses in total.
• Scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (BTCSOL) for four academic courses.

The three CIS scholarships for Chinese language teacher training typically begin in September or March. These scholarships can only be applied for online. During the process, the system will give you the option of selecting two universities from among the 150 that offer this scholarship across the country, in order of priority.

Eligibility Criteria for Confucius Institute Scholarship 2023

• A degree of Chinese language proficiency is required (written and oral HSK, as well as BCT and oral BCT in some cases). This varies depending on the type of scholarship. For example, to be eligible for a scholarship to study Chinese language and culture, you must have a minimum of 180 points in the written HSK3 and a minimum of 60 points in the oral HSK. Minimum qualification for Confucius Institute scholarship application

To be eligible for the MTCSOL scholarship, you must have a diploma and an academic record from your undergraduate studies. In order to be eligible for the BTCSOL scholarship or Chinese language courses, you must have completed your high school studies. If you do not have this documentation in either English or Chinese, you must submit a sworn translation in either language.

• A letter of recommendation for scholarship applicants who want to study a Chinese course or BTCSOL, and two letters of recommendation for MTCSOL scholarship applicants. The letters must be signed by the person in charge of the Confucius Institute where you applied for the scholarship.
• Applicants who demonstrate that they have a job as Chinese Language professors after completing their master’s degree studies in China will be preferred for the MTCSOL scholarship.
• In the case of one-semester or four-week scholarships, you have never studied in China before.

How To Apply

Step 1. Register on the Confucius Institute Scholarships website (click here: http://cis.chinese.cn), fill out the Confucius Institute Scholarships Application Form online, and upload scanned copies of relevant supporting documents.

• Then you must submit all of the necessary paper documents (preferably certified copies, since they will not be returned). The person in charge of your Confucius Institute’s scholarships will be responsible for mailing them to Hanban’s headquarters (central offices of the Confucius Institute in China).
• If you are not a Confucius Institute student, you can apply online and send your documents to the nearest Confucius Institute, a Chinese embassy or consulate in your country, or some exam centers or educational institutions affiliated with Hanban.

Step 3: Request recommendations from Confucius Institutes (independent Confucius Classrooms) in your countries, overseas Chinese language testing centers, educational and cultural sections of Chinese embassies and consulates, or host institutions in China (only for MTCSOL candidates).

Step 4: Be patient. Normally, admissions decisions are made within 45 working days of the application materials being confirmed as valid. Following confirmation with successful applicants, host institutions will send the “Letter of Admission,” “Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China” (JW202 Form), a copy of the scholarship certificate, and other relevant documents to the recommending institutions within 15 working days.

Date of final results:

The final results of the scholarship students can be found on the official page of the Confucius Institute scholarships at the beginning of July (if you are starting in September) or the beginning of January (if you start in March).

Sending documents for visa processing: The necessary documents for visa processing are mailed within 15 days of the result’s publication. I recommend patience at this point in the procedure because you may have to wait more than a month to receive the letter.
