The Gates Cambridge Scholarships program was established in October 2000 by a US$210 million donation to the University of Cambridge from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; this is the largest single donation to a UK university. The first group of scholars arrived in October 2001. You too can be part of this success story.
Each year, Gates Cambridge awards approximately 80 full-funded scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries other than the United Kingdom to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.
Approximately two-thirds of these awards will be available to PhD students, with approximately 25 awards available in the US round and 55 available in the International round.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are among the world’s most prestigious international scholarships. Scholarships are given to outstanding applicants from countries other than the United Kingdom to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject at the University of Cambridge.

Scholarship worth and inclusions:
A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the entire cost of studying at Cambridge, including tuition, living expenses, travel expenses, visa fees, and so on. It also provides discretionary funding for things like academic development, family allowance, fieldwork, and so on.

Eligibility Criteria
Who can apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarships program?
You are eligible to apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:
- a citizen of any country other than the United Kingdom
- applying to the University of Cambridge to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study:
- PhD
- MPhil/MLitt
- One-year postgraduate course (with some exceptions listed below)
Courses that are NOT eligible for Gates Cambridge Scholarships program:
- Any Undergraduate degree, such as BA (undergraduate) or BA affiliated (a second BA)
- Business Doctorate (BusD)
- Master of Finance (MFin)
- Master of Business (MBA)
- MBBChir Clinical Studies
- PGCE
- MD Doctor of Medicine degree (6 years, part-time)
- Part-time degrees
- Graduate Course in Medicine (A101)
- Non-degree courses
- Note that from September 2022, MASt courses will be treated as undergraduate courses for fee purposes, and applications will no longer be accepted for courses beginning in October 2023 and later.

How To Apply
Applicants apply for admission and funding (Gates Cambridge and other funding) through the University’s Graduate Application Portal. To be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, you must first complete the section on applying for admission to a course and a College place, as well as the Gates Cambridge portion of the funding section.
There are two Gates Cambridge application deadlines: 13 October 2022 (for US citizens residing in the United States) and early December 2022 or early January 2023, depending on the course (for all other eligible applicants).
