How To Send Money Via PayPal Friends And Family
Hey guys, here is everything you need to know about how to send money via PayPal friends and family. PayPal is already the most popular payment processor for both businesses and individuals. But the Friends and Family (PPFF) service enhances its functionality.
PayPal is a popular payment processor for both businesses and individuals. But when the two are combined, things get complicated. However, as long as users understand how to use it, the service can be a great way to send and receive money to and from anyone, anywhere in the world, at any time of time.

Here are a few tips about PayPal friends and family transfers (and some friendly warnings).
See How to Send and Receive money with PayPal.
What exactly is PayPal Friends & Family (PPFF)?

When you send or receive money through your personal PayPal account, you can specify whether the payment is for “Friends and Family” or “Goods and Services.”
Friends and Family payments are frequently used to repay a friend, send money to family members overseas, or send digital gift cards.
As the name implies, PPFF was designed to be used specifically for money transfers between friends and family members. It enables small groups of people to send and receive funds for personal use. This is as opposed to using PayPal for business payments or business-related transactions.
However, the Friends and Family method is appealing due to the advantages it provides for personal transfers.
How do I use it?
Before you can use PPFF, both you and your recipient must have a PayPal account. If you don’t already, you can sign up for one for free.
How To Send Money Via PayPal Friends And Family

To send money with PayPal friends and family only takes a few steps. Here are how to use the payment services:
- Log in to your PayPal account with your phone or pc
- Click on Send & Request.
- Under Send money, Enter your phone number, email, or contact name.
- When prompted, choose Sending to a friend.
- Enter the payment amount, add a note (that’s if you like),
- Click Submit to complete sending the money to the recipient.
How do PayPal Friends And Family work?
Using PPFF does not necessitate any changes to how PayPal users interact with the payment platform. When preparing to send money to friends or family, PayPal prompts the user to select either “Sending to a friend” or “Paying for goods or service.”
See How to Send and Receive money with PayPal.
The choice made here determines whether the PPFF option is used or not. Based on this, the payment solution will automatically adjust the transaction to conform to the appropriate transfer protocols.
Important Note: PayPal friends and family may not be available in all countries.
You can also send money to friends and family by using the PayPal app or PayPal.Me. On the app, you simply enter the payment amount before choosing whether or not it is a friends and family payment.
How much does it cost to use
Payments to friends and family can be made to anyone in the United States for free (from your bank account or PayPal).
If you send money internationally, you may be charged a transaction fee of 5% of the amount sent (up to $4.99 USD).
When you use a debit or credit card to make a purchase, you will be charged a small processing fee for both domestic and international transactions. The current rate is 2.9 percent plus a fixed fee (varies by currency; $0.30 in the United States).
Can I get scammed on PayPal friends and family?
Regrettably, yes.
The following rule applies: if someone isn’t your real-life friend or family, they shouldn’t be your PayPal friends or family.
Sometimes sellers will ask you to pay with PayPal’s friends and family rather than the traditional Goods and services payment method. Because there is no fee, they may offer you a reduced rate.
But, don’t be deceived, hence don’t take the bait.
Using PPFF for business purchases is expressly prohibited by their User Agreement:
“When paying for goods or services, you must not use the “send money to a friend or family member” feature in your PayPal account.”
Business owners are aware of this and should never request payment in this manner. Consider it a red flag and only pay the goods and services fee.
Does PayPal Refund Fraudulent Payment Requests?
While PayPal protects against “Goods and Services” scams, it does not refund “payments sent using PayPal’s friends and family functionality.”
As a result, the following information only applies to payments for goods and services made from personal PayPal accounts.
PayPal Purchase Protection protects payments for goods and services. This is what it means:
- Sellers do not have access to your complete financial information.
- Transactions are encrypted and monitored around the clock.
- Every global transaction is covered.
For Buyers
According to PayPal’s policy, you are protected if:
- You are charged for something you did not buy
- If your order never arrives, or
- Your order arrives, but it’s different than described (it’s not what you ordered).
If any of these things happen to you, PayPal will refund the full purchase price plus any shipping costs (just make sure you report the issue within 60 days of the transaction date).
PayPal prefers that you first work with the seller, but if they refuse to click the “Issue a Refund” button, you can file a dispute in the Resolution Center.
For Sellers/Vendors
The protection guarantees for Sellers are very similar. PayPal, in particular, protects against two types of buyer complaints:
- “Illegal or Unauthorized Transaction”
- “Item was not received.”
However, in order for Sellers to be protected by PayPal, they must have proof of delivery or shipment and be honest about all details.
