The International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE) is available to international students who wish to pursue Master’s degree programs in research at the University of Waterloo. Based on the Faculty’s award allocation, eligible students will be nominated. Academic excellence as demonstrated by their application for admission to the graduate program will be used to select students.

The International Masters Award of Excellence is worth $2,500 per term for a maximum of five full-time terms. This program’s time limit is (6 terms), and will be given to eligible international master’s students who are normally entering a research-based graduate program at the University of Waterloo.

To qualify for the University of Waterloo international masters of excellence awards, students must:

  • International students enrolled full-time and charged international tuition fees
  • Typically given to students enrolled in research-based programs (thesis or major research paper).
  • Normally only given to students starting their first term of study (term 1.0).
  • Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence using the Faculty’s criteria.
  • He/she must meet the program’s academic progress requirements and have no outstanding probationary admission requirements.
  • This award may be in addition to other internal or external scholarships (for example, the UW Graduate Scholarship, the OGS, and so on). Scholarships are not the same as sponsorships;
  • Students should not normally be receiving foreign government or agency sponsorship (e.g., China Scholarship Council, Libyan sponsorship, etc.) at the same time, nor should they be fully or partially self-funded in excess of the Faculty minimum levels of support.
  • Students who have been grandfathered under the current IMSA program cannot be nominated for an IMAE;
  • however, a student who has previously been awarded an IMSA for a previously completed master’s degree can be nominated for an IMAE.
  • Based on their admissions application, students will be automatically considered for this award.
  • Departments and/or faculties will establish their own internal process for selecting recipients based on eligibility criteria and allocation.
  • As needed, faculties may impose stricter eligibility criteria.

Application instructions for the Waterloo International Master’s Award of Excellence

Students will be considered for this award automatically based on their admission application; thus, no separate scholarship application is required. Departments and/or faculties will select and nominate students for the scholarship. The application deadline for most Masters programs beginning in September 2022 falls between January and February of that year.
