The Ron Brown Scholar Program is dedicated to bettering the lives of intellectually gifted, community-minded, and public-service-minded African Americans by accelerating their advancement into impactful leadership roles and opportunities.

About Ron Brown Scholar Program(RBSP)

The Ron Brown Scholar Fund is a 501c3 public charity that oversees the RBSP. RBSP is a college scholarship and leadership program for African American students founded in 1996 by Anthony M. Pilaro to honor the late Secretary of Commerce.

The program honors Ronald H. Brown’s legacy by providing a selective scholarship program for community-minded and intellectually gifted African Americans.

RBSP competitively awards 45 – 50 four-year $40,000 scholarships ($10,000 per year) to the most talented and economically disadvantaged high school seniors who demonstrate a strong interest in public service, community engagement, business entrepreneurship, and global citizenship – the four pillars of the late Ronald H. Brown’s mission to uplift people of all races, cultures, and ethnicities, particularly our disadvantaged youth.

The renewable scholarships can be used to attend any accredited four-year college or university in the United States. Ron Brown scholarships are not restricted to any particular field or career goal but may be used to pursue any academic discipline. More than 450 students have been named Ron Brown Scholars since the program’s inception in 1996.

Types of Ron Brown Scholar Program

There are types of scholarship programs offered by this program. The three initiatives support young people who share Ron Brown’s dedication to individual excellence, leadership, and public service:

The Ron Brown Scholarship

This s a national scholarship for low-income African American high school seniors. Ron Brown Scholars receive $40,000 toward their college of choice and are provided mentoring, leadership experiences, and service opportunities.

Ron Brown – Ruth and Norman Rales Leaders Network

This extends career services and professional development to the top 2-3% of Scholarship applicants. However, there is no additional application is required– “Captains” are invited to join based on their application to the Ron Brown Scholarship competition.

Guided Pathway Support Program (GPS)

This is a free, innovative college access program for African American juniors and seniors in high school (as well as their parents and counselors). Our high-tech, high-touch approach gives students the mentoring, information, and inspiration they require to make college a reality.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants who meet the following requirements are strongly encouraged to apply for the Ron Brown Scholar Program:

• Must be Black/African American.
• Applicants must be US citizens or hold permanent residents, and
• A current high school senior at the time of their application.
• Interested applicants must excel academically.
• He/she must exhibit exceptional leadership potential.
• Applicants must participate in community service activities.
• Importantly, applicants must demonstrate strong financial need.

Application Deadline

The Ron Brown Scholar Program has two application deadlines (note: students must be current high school seniors at the time of application):

November 1st, your application will be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program as well as forwarded to a select and limited number of additional scholarship providers.

While January 9th is the final postmarked deadline to be considered for the Ron Brown Scholar Program ONLY.

Because the postmark is all that matters, there is no benefit to sending your application via overnight delivery service. If January 9th falls on a Saturday or Sunday, your application must be postmarked by the following Monday.
