The William Louis Poteat Scholarship program, which began in 1982, honors one of the university’s most prominent historical figures. William Louis Poteat, a devout Baptist, was a biology professor, president of the college from 1905 to 1927, and a widely recognized champion of academic freedom.
These scholarships strengthen Wake Forest’s long-standing ties to its Baptist roots and the state of North Carolina.
The William Louis Poteat Scholarship is given to up to twenty first-year students who are active members of a North Carolina Baptist church and are in need of financial assistance. The award is based on excellent academic achievement, leadership potential, and involvement in one’s church, and recipients must demonstrate the potential to make a significant contribution to church and society.
More so, these Scholarships are awarded to admitted new students who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in secondary school and the potential to positively impact the Wake Forest community both inside and outside of the classroom.

Eligibility Criteria
Poteat Scholarship is a need-based scholarship with a competitive application process.
- Applicants should complete both the CSS Profile® and the FAFSATM by January 1 in order to determine needs before the selection process is completed.
- Applicants must demonstrate the potential to make a significant contribution to society.
- The recipient must be a first-year student
- Must have demonstrated exceptional achievement in secondary school and
- the potential to positively impact the Wake Forest community both inside and outside of the classroom.
